2019 marked the 25 year anniversary of Liverpool Powerhouse being open to the community as an arts centre. The commissioned video work was shown at their annual program launch, to showcase the importance of having dedicated arts spaces that nurture creativity for local artists and community members.
The video obverses the woman, the art, and the stories they have to tell us.
The woman acts as the human embodiment of Liverpool Powerhouse, she’s quirky, fun and one of a kind - it just took a while for her to realise that. She embodies a feeling of community and culture coming together in embrace.
The woman initially appears as timid and tired of her day-to-day life, she finds comfort in little acts of whimsy. There’s a child-like wonder to her that isn’t nurtured by her surroundings. At Liverpool Powerhouse she feels this urge to connect with the space and the artworks around her. From reserved moves, she escalates to dancing from space to space, fully immersing herself in her surroundings.
The physical centre plays another integral character in the video. It’s shown as a creative and cultural hub that can almost alter itself to the individual and their creative needs. While the woman is inside the centre and dancing around, there’s no one else in there but her.
