Smile! You're on Camera was an installation that explored the anxieties and joys of being on camera. The installation encouraged exploration of the self in fun and exciting ways using cameras, mirrors, and curated backdrops. Promoting the idea that everyone deserves to be seen, and that there’s a power to seeing yourself represented on screen and behind the camera.
As a part of the ReFill Arts-in-Education program, students from Miller Technology High School created a series of artworks to be exhibited at the WOW Festival in 2022. Inspired by and responding to creative prompts over the course of a school term, the students created artworks based on identity and self-expression. Festival attendees had the opportunity to engage with the tech filled space, and could choose to superimpose themselves into the artworks around them, or record a video or take a photos of themselves in the designed physical and virtual spaces.
Alongside the installation, the ReFill creative team and Miller Technology students delivered two days of interactive green screen workshops, where festival audiences could make their own green-screen backdrops, which were then uploaded and visible on a big screen through an interactive webcam for audiences to engage with.
