Lunar Lights was the second of five CULTUREVATE events held on 18 November 2023 at PYT Fairfield, produced by Tammy Dang. The event dedicated itself to the celebration of South East Asian culture in Fairfield and how this vibrant cultural group shaped the local community over time.
The local community came together to sing karaoke on the sidewalk, create paper lanterns, and parade around the block following lion dancers. The program included traditional and modern performances, artistic exhibitions, a makers market, and hands-on arts and craft workshops - all delivered by western Sydney artists of South East Asian heritage.
Radiating from PYT Fairfield's location on Harris Street, indoor and outdoor spaces were transformed into a whimsical Mekong market. With hints of French colonialism, vibrant florals, and offering stations; the spaces became an ode to the resilient communities of South East Asia in the homelands and diaspora, and their underlying and ever present commitment to resistance and joy.
